Let’s talk about photographer client confidentiality. This is a HUGE deal to me. I will never post “sneak peeks”of your photo sessions without your permission, and there are several reasons why.
Photography as a gift
One of the most important reasons for this photographer client confidentiality rule: I have no way of knowing if your portrait session is part of a gift, and because it’s a gift I might spoil the surprise by sharing something! Imagine if you were giving Nana a framed portrait for Christmas but, unknown to you, she had already seen it on the internet (and worse still printed it out and framed it (this is not only tacky but illegal)). It would be terrible for you to arrive ready to exchange gifts and see this image printed at a low quality because big box store or drugstore lab couldn’t get the proper color balance. This immediately cheapens your gifts. You came to a professional to allow me to make sure that the colors are true, you look your best, and all the hassle is taken care of. You trust me with these memories, and I take this very seriously. Your privacy is important.
Can you add designated people to this?
I always keep your privacy in mind, and for that reason at the sales session I ask you if you would like others to be able to purchase photographs, and if so, who should be able to make those purchases. As security tightens this is a real concern.. you might have estranged family who would try to purchase photographs from your session without your permission. It is also possible you just don’t want Nana to see the price of true professional photography.
At the end of the day, it is about respect.
My final reason for never posting sneak peeks without your permission is that I do not want any image of you to be released without you feeling good about it. You are in control. I respect you and the trust you are placing in me.
On the other hand, if this is a styled session I approach you about all bets are off! 🙂 These sessions are for my creative process to run wild!
